ARTS

Jasmine Hsu 徐明鈺 is a Taiwanese-born American artist whose work explores the intersections of culture, identity, and artistic media. She holds an MFA in Photography and Computer Arts from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia. Drawing from her own experiences, Jasmine uses mixed media to create abstract visualizations that express the contrasts and connections between Eastern and Western cultures.

Jasmine’s paintings invite viewers into an alternate universe, illuminated by ethereal technicolor tones. Her intricate process involves layering and scraping, which both reveals and conceals delicate surfaces. Inspired by influential artists such as Cai Guo-Qiang, Hur Kyung-Ae, and Helen Frankenthaler, her work draws on photographic aesthetics, specifically the multilayered emulsions that form photographic imagery. Jasmine translates this visual language to painting, making it appear as though an emulsion layer from a photograph has been transferred onto canvas. Each layer serves as a metaphor for cultural and artistic transference, moving between East and West, and from photography to painting. Unrestrained liquids merge and flow across the canvas, juxtaposed against the strict geometry that frames the work, symbolizing both freedom and structure in cultural exchange.
